GET IN THE RIGHT MINDSET BEFORE YOU START DECLUTTERING

DON’T FEEL OVERWHELMED!

First things first: You don’t need to finish decluttering tonight, or even tomorrow! Take your time. Don’t stress out about what you have. At first, you will find that there really is too much stuff in your home. Don’t feel overwhelmed! Just go step by step and take your time.

IDENTIFY YOUR EMOTIONAL CONNECTION

Most of the things that we have in our home spark some kind of emotion in us. Old photographs, gifts or things from our past. Don’t get hung up on those things. Keep this question in mind: Does this thing make me happy? If not: Toss it. Don’t feel guilty about getting rid of presents!

HOW (AND WHERE) TO START DECLUTTERING

START WITH THE EASY THINGS

Start with the easy things! If you start with emotional items, you might get stuck and lose the courage to get rid of stuff. Clothes are a great way to start. When was the last time you wore that dress? Is that sweater still your style? Make a big pile and decide one piece at a time.

HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR HOME IN ONE WEEKEND - OR LESS

  • Make a list of all the rooms in your home and estimate how much time you will need for each room. That way, you won’t get hung up on things but keep on moving from one room to the other.
  • Gather your supplies - large trash bags and empty boxes are essential! Plus: Get a timer so you can see how much time you spend in each room.
  • Choose what stays and what goes - Make two big piles, one for KEEP and one for TOSS. If you can’t decide on an item right away, put it aside for now and get back to it later.
  • Sort through your TOSS pile and divide it into three different groups - TRASH/RECYCLE, SELL and DONATE.
  • Neatly store away the things you want to keep. Make use of boxes to keep your drawers nice and tidy.

PRO TIP: ONE IN, ONE OUT

Here is a pro tip for you: Go for the ONE IN - ONE OUT rule. Take mugs for example: If you buy a new one or get one as a presents, get rid of another one. This way, you will always keep the right amount of mugs and you will be able to keep your kitchen clutterfree!

WABI SABI

Wabi Sabi is a Japanese trend that can be taken into account when decorating your home. It is all about less things, nice quality and finding good in imperfection. It also means: Give your decorations a purpose. You have a cute basket? Make it useful by storing blankets or magazines in it!

DECLUTTER YOUR WARDROBE THE RIGHT WAY

HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR WARDROBE WITHOUT STRESSING OUT ABOUT IT

  • Take everything out of your closet to see how much stuff you really have. Gather it on a pile on your bedroom floor or on your bed.
  • Prepare yourself to get in the decluttering mood. Whatever helps - loud music, coffee, cookies - you decide what keeps you going.
  • First things first: Get rid of everything with holes, socks that are single, anything that is faded and/or stretched.
  • Ask yourself this question: Have I worn this in the last six months? No? Time to let it go.
  • Next question: Would I buy this if I was in the store right now? If not - you know what to do…
  • Now, put your clothes neatly folded back into your closet.
  • Take special occasion items and put them in the far corner of your closet. Keep them, but keep them out of sight.

DON’T GET DISTRACTED

We know the problem: When we go out shopping and see the big SALE signs, we tend to forget what we like and go for the cheap items - even when the clothes don’t even match our styles. Try to stick to the clothes and colours that suit you well, and try not to be seduced by clothing on sale!

SAME CLOTHES, DIFFERENT OCCASION

OUTFIT IDEA: BUSINESS CHIC

We’ll show you how you can take basic clothes and style them in totally different ways! Our basis is a green dress. To create a business chic look, choose the right jacket, bag and accessories. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to style one piece of clothing in so many different ways!

GRAY BLAZER TO SPIKE UP YOUR DRESS

Business doesn’t have to mean conservative and serious. However, subtle colours like grey and black definitely upgrade your business look! A black business bag in combination with a grey blazer do the trick. In combination with the green basis dress, you will dressed for the occasion.

CHOOSE YOUR ACCESSORIES RIGHT

Gold accessories are a great choice when it comes to spicing up your business outfit. Choose subtle earrings and combine them with an elegant necklace and a bracelet.

BLACK PUMPS: A GREAT WAY TO FINISH OFF THE BUSINESS LOOK

What better way to finish off your business look than with black pumps? They don’t only make a good posture, but also get your green dress the chic style it deserves. Be a stunner at your next business meeting!

OUTFIT IDEA: WEEKEND CASUAL

To get a good contrast, our second occasion is totally different from the first one. Think weekend, going shopping, not having to work but having fun with your friends! It’s still the same dress, but styled in a different way to create a look for a different occasion. Easy, right?

GET THAT DENIM LOOK

Go for bolder colours in your casual look. How about a denim jacket or a denim blouse? Blue really goes well with your green dress. Plus: You can get a blue backpack that matches your jacket. A backpack fits so much more than a bag, so you have all of your things at hand for the weekend!

ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR CASUAL LOOK

It’s time to choose your accessories! While gold goes well for your business look, how about silver in your casual weekend outfit? Geometrical forms like triangles are all the rage right now. In combination with round sunglasses and a circular ring, these accessories will really stand out!

CASUAL SNEAKERS FOR A CASUAL OUTFIT

You’re almost done with your casual weekend outfit. How about grey sneakers to finish off that look? In those, you won’t get sore feet while going shopping all day with your friends. These sneakers will definitely be comfy all day, even if you go dancing the night away…
